WE ASK THE EXPERTS

Those in the know tell FFT all about fashion dons past, present and future, from Souey to a pair of Red Devils

GARY ASPDEN ADIDAS SPEZIAL DESIGNER

“The first time I saw Tom Davies on the pitch, he was unshaven with slightly outgrown hair, socks down to his ankles – without shin pads – and sporting black boots with white stripes. He looked like a real footballer – a traditional, 3pm Saturday afternoon player. I found him to be a refreshing change from those overly groomed players who seem to take their style leads from American RNB singers or TOWIE... and the Everton man could play.

“When I was asked if I wanted to send him some adidas Spezial for a photo shoot, I didn’t hesitate, as in many ways he personifies what Spezial is about. His style looks natural. Cool, by definition, is not breaking a sweat – not trying too hard – and that’s how Tom comes across. Anyone who is trying to be cool, by virtue of the fact that they are trying to, can never be that.”

CRAIG FORD BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB

“In 1985 I read a biography about Graeme Souness, and during the 1986-87 season I went to almost every Rangers home match and many of their away games, not because I was interested in the game but because I was absolutely obsessed with the mainly Italian casualwear – Best Company, Fiorucci, Pop 84, Caio and so on – being worn by fans.

“When Souey came back from Sampdoria, he claimed to be the first UK footballer ever to wear Gucci loafers with no socks. For that reason, he will always be a don to me.”

MIKE CHETCUTI ADIDAS GLOBAL ADVISOR

“If you’re asking me which footballers look good, then straightaway I’m going to defend Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard from the awful stick they got when they appeared on TV at half-time in the legends game between Manchester United and Bayern Munich.

“To me, they looked great, like very together, smart young men; local working-class lads in expensive suits, looking contemporary, sharp and confident.

“Diddy commented on the look on Rashford’s Instagram – “Black Excellence” – so I’d guess Dave from Wrexham’s comments about him became even more insignificant.”
