The big talking point among the fans is the return to signing players who are young and hungry. Our experiment last season with recruiting guys from Scotland, or players who were at the midpoint of their careers – some of them on big wages – didn’t pay off. This season will be different because Steve Evans isn’t in charge. It will be interesting to see if the relationship between boss Darren Ferguson and chairman Darragh Macanthony can be successful for a third time.
Save the date for Sunderland away on Easter Monday. That could be huge. The best Peterborough social media account is @Poshmatchlive, excellent for in-game updates, and @DMAC102. The opposition player I secretly admire is Ben Close at Portsmouth. Our most underrated player is Joe Ward [below], at full-back or on the wing. He does a lot of work without recording the numbers that Marcus Maddison and Siriki Dembele do. Our key player will be midfielder Marcus Maddison [above]. If he turns up every week, we’ll be right up there. Look out for Serhat Tasdemir, bought from Fylde, and Frazer Blake-tracey from King’s Lynn Town, who is moving up four levels of the football pyramid. The player I’d happily drive to another club is Isaac Buckley-ricketts, after two forgettable appearances in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The best thing about the matchday experience at Peterborough is the inflatable dartboard outside.
The one change I’d make to the club would be to improve the facilities. There are challenges with the ground, but running out of food and drink by half-time and not being able to pay by card in some areas isn’t good enough. Did you know that in an away game at Wycombe in 2000, we conceded twice without touching the ball in between [either side of half-time]. The fans’ opinion of the gaffer is that he’s popular, but after six years in League One the pressure is on to take us up this year, especially with the calibre of new players brought in. We’ll finish 3rd.
