In 2001, Vincenzo Montella, Gabriel Batistuta and Rome’s favourite son, Francesco Totti, broke the stranglehold of clubs from Milan or Turin to capture the Scudetto – making them the last to do so. Guided by Fabio Capello and backed up by Cafu, Walter Samuel and Cristiano Zanetti, Totti roamed free and played some of the best football of his career. He was named Serie A Italian Footballer of the Year – but most importantly, won his only league title.
