LOWER- LEAGUE GAZZA

-

After an unspectacular spell with Everton, the Geordie legend joined Burnley in 2002, but couldn’t help Stan Ternent’s side make the play- offs and left after six games. In 2003, he headed for China with Gansu Tianma – documentary team in tow

– but broke down with depression and checked into an Arizona clinic. Keen for one last stab, Gazza signed for League Two Boston United, then got a crack at management with non- league Kettering Town in 2005... only to be sacked after 39 days. Just like that, it was all over.

A rookie boss, colourful chairman, disgraced mentor and a club vying for promotion. What could go wrong? Ah, yes: everything. In 2006, a post- race row Ron Atkinson rocked up at League Two Peterborough United with old pal Barry Fry – and Sky handed Posh £ 100,000 for the privilege. But Big Ron clashed with gaffer Steve Bleasdale, who quit in the changing room before a game. Fry took charge, and Posh missed the play- offs. But it wasn’t all bad: property tycoon Darragh Macanthony bought the club after watching the show.
