UNDERDOGS IN EUROPE

-

Forget the big guns for a second – a number of less fashionable English teams also had their moments in Europe. In 2004, Millwall played Hungarian team Ferencvaros in UEFA Cup qualifying due to FA Cup final opponents Manchester United already being in Europe; three campaigns before, Ipswich Town had also made it for finishing fifth, and beat Inter at Portman Road. Even after being relegated in 2002, the Suffolk side qualified again via fair play rules, playing as a second- tier team. Then, after Boro advanced to the final in 2006 ( p35), Bolton progressed to the last 16 by ousting Atletico Madrid, who had Sergio Aguero sent off for spitting. Naughty boy.
