Brainchild of Malmo chairman Eric Persson and founded in 1961- 62, the so- called ‘ Cup for the Cupless’ was initially claimed by only one team each season – until things got loopy in 1967, when it was decided that several group victors would all get money. From 1995, UEFA took charge and granted winners entry to the UEFA Cup, benefiting the likes of West Ham ( 1999), Aston Villa ( 2001), Fulham ( 2002) and Newcastle ( 2006).
