Having lost to Brazil in a 1998 World Cup final- four shootout, the Dutch then hosted Italy in the semis of Euro 2000. Frank de Boer and Patrick Kluivert missed spot- kicks during the game itself, then De Boer repeated his feat in the shootout. Jaap Stam decided to hit his penalty into outer space, and Paul Bosvelt also failed, to confirm their defeat.
