Why did you decide to leave Tottenham for Sevilla in 2005?

In my second season there was Robbie Keane, Defoe, Mido and me upfront. Martin Jol really liked me, so I played a lot. I didn’t score many goals but got plenty of assists. Unfortunat­ely, I had some clashes with Jol – he wanted to be the strong guy, and sometimes did it in a way that meant I had a few things to say to him as well. He didn’t like that, and by the end of the season he didn’t want me around. I received offers from Premier League clubs, but wanted to try something different after spending five years in London.

I was already involved in some charity work in Africa, and was also an ambassador for a club. I saw something I disliked – agents coming to the club, picking the best players, taking them to Europe and disappeari­ng with their money. Once they had signed their first contract, the agent didn’t care any more. The players were calling us and we had to manage these tough situations. I created a consulting and management company, specialisi­ng in youth training, and work alongside teams in Mali and Zambia. We train players and coaches, and when the guys reach 17 or 18, the best go to Europe and we help them to find the right club. Moussa Djenepo became the first academy player to join a Premier League side with Southampto­n in 2019. It’s working well.
