THE FIVE- POINT FIX LIST

Stephen Howson, from the Stretford Paddock Youtube channel, explains how the Red Devils’ new boss can put things right

1 BE DEMANDING

Every manager under the Glazers has had at least one transfer window where they've had to ‘ make do’ – even Sir Alex. Ten Hag cannot allow that to happen. So many players have left already, arguably more have to go, and he needs backing in a big way with signings. Recruitment is what he’ll live and die on – it’s essential he gets exactly what he wants.

2 BE THE BOSS

As well as being very demanding with the board, the gaffer must make the players aware that the buck stops with him; that his word is final. We’ve seen player power infect United’s dressing room and the result has been disastrous. We can’t have the leaks or complaints that riddled last season. He must wield the sort of control that makes him feared.

3 TRUST IN YOUTH

The Class of 2022 have just triumphed in the FA Youth Cup – Alejandro Garnacho and Charlie Mcneill could debut and collect a few minutes. Add that to the many prospects United have had out on loan – James Garner, Dylan Levitt, Brandon Williams, Ethan Laird, Teden Mengi and Di’shon Bernard – and there's talent available. Not all will make it, but someone might shock us.

4 DON’T LET UP

There’s a cliché in here somewhere, but there are no straightforward games in the Premier League – under previous managers, taking so- called ‘ easy’ games lightly has been one of the reasons we’ve failed so often. What makes the Premier League so good is how tight those matches are – no one knows when they’re beaten, so don’t let up for a second.

5 GET STUCK IN

We’ve seen those in charge at United lately who’ve been very much in the mould of ‘ manager’ rather than coach. Ten Hag is more of a hands- on coach – I’m not sure we’ve ever had someone of this ilk at the club. His style of play and tactical approach is 100 per cent his – it’s what defines him – so be yourself, Erik, and get stuck in. Do whatever works for you.
