LAST SEASON

LEAGUE ONE 14th FA CUP Fourth Round LEAGUE CUP Second Round TOP SCORER Sam Smith ( 21)

FAN FILE

Last season was probably my most enjoyable supporting The U’s, riding off the back of promotion from League Two with packed home crowds every week and big away days – including

that win at Newcastle in the FA Cup. This season will be different because we don’t have that momentum from promotion. It might even be a bigger achievement to stay up this year.

Our key player will be between Joe Ironside and Sam Smith – the pair combined to score 29 league goals last time out. I won’t be happy unless we stay up. League One was fantastic last year; among so many heavyweight clubs, we’re always the underdogs and the U’s fanbase is growing all the time. What’s not to love? Our most underrated player is

George Williams. When Kyle Knoyle left for Doncaster last summer, fans were fearing the worst, but then Willo came in and hit the ground running.

Fans think our ground is endearing. Quirky, full of character, a bit shabby in places, but the Abbey is our home.

Fans think our owner is a saviour! Paul Barry has invested heavily so we’re back on an even keel, and in March we announced we’d bought back the ground’s freehold. We own our home. I’m least looking forward to playing

Wycombe. We haven’t won at Adams Park since 2001 – I was hoping they’d go up so we didn’t have to play them. The opposition player I’d love here is

Alfie May of Cheltenham. He scored 26 goals last season and kept them up. Up top with Big Joe… a dream combo!

The fans’ opinion of the gaffer is that he’s a legend. From Abbey terraces to the dugout, Mark Bonner [ below] is a U at heart. He talks really well and our best bit of business this summer is keeping hold of him. If he left, he should be replaced by first- team coach Barry Corr. He has had the best seat in the house to see Bonner shape this team. The pantomime villain will be

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry. The U’s will face Posh in a league game for the first time in 20 years – it should be a spicy one! We’ll finish 14th.

FFT VERDICT 15TH

No Wes Hoolahan, but much of the crop that delivered Cambridge’s highest finish in 28 years remains, with Bolton- bound Jack Iredale the notable exception. Another finish in mid- table is achievable: Adam May inked a new deal to join solid pros in Williams and Paul Digby.
