MY FOOTBALL

- ROD STEWART Who from Celtic’s past would you bring back? CELTIC

I always said when Jonny Hayes went that he was a class full- back. He scored a wonderful goal against Rangers during a 2- 0 win [ in September 2019].

Which player do you like even though they never played for Celtic?

Eric Caldow was a brilliant player for Rangers in the ’ 50s and ’ 60s. His Scotland career came to an end after Bobby Smith broke his leg during a win over England. I played against Bobby during a charity match back in the ’ 70s; I was staying at a lovely place in Windsor and said, “Bobby, why don’t you come back to the house for a cup of tea or sherry or something?” When we got back, he asked for a loan of some money – 300 quid. I went upstairs and gave him the money. I never saw him again.

Where’s the best place you’ve watched a game?

The most unusual was the Shanghai Celtic Supporters’ Club. I was on my way to Australia and Celtic had a cup game, so I stopped off to stay overnight. It was this tiny little room full of Celtic supporters, with a tiny screen that kept coming and going, but it was fantastic. It was one of those nights you’ll never forget.

You’re known for doing possibly the greatest cup draw ever...

We’d drank a couple of bevvies and Sky asked me if I’d like to do it. I said, “Listen, I’ve had a couple of drinks” and they said it was fine. I’m an ad- lib guy and, lo and behold, I just pissed about a bit. It went around the world and became one of the most high- profile Scottish Cup draws that’s ever been and probably ever will be.

How did it feel to present the trophy when Celtic won the Scottish League Cup in 2015?

It was one of the greatest memories. I was pleased for my little Alastair – he was really chuffed to see Scott Brown. I say little – Alastair’s 6ft 5in now and just come back from Italy with his girlfriend.
