WILL THE TALISMAN STILL BE AT SPURS NEXT YEAR?

-

You know you’re a Spurs player when you break the all-time scoring records for club

and country, hit your best league tally for six years, and still endure one of the most miserable seasons of your career to date.

This was meant to be the year Tottenham competed at the top with Manchester City and Liverpool. Instead, it’s been a season of refunding fans, watching rivals Arsenal push hard for the title, and wondering if Kane will ever have his great service to Spurs repaid.

Once again, he’s put the club on his back. Kane showed unwavering loyalty to Jose Mourinho and to Antonio Conte, even scoring the final goal of Cristian Stellini’s reign before rolling up his sleeves once again to help Ryan Mason. This has been the season of Erling Haaland and yet Kane is probably even more important to his team, consistently dazzling through the Tottenham gloom. If it’s possible to win a Silver Boot in style, England’s captain is doing so. Apart from Haaland, nobody else has scored more than 23 goals in a Premier League season since Mohamed Salah five years ago – Kane reached that total with eight games of the 2022-23 term remaining.

Kane was once labelled a one-season wonder by detractors. In this one season, he became immortal. Through the wind and rain in north London, the 29-year-old has planted his feet firmer into the grass. He has been Tottenham’s creator, finisher and leader; would anyone have been surprised if he had taken the goalkeeper gloves after Spurs went 5-0 down to Newcastle inside 20 minutes? As of mid-april, statistically no player had taken their team further up the table with his goals.

And that’s just the goals. He is worth so much more – and with only a year left on his contract, we might learn exactly how much. If Kane stays in the Premier League, Alan Shearer’s goals record comes into view; will Kane be at Spurs to break it? He has his own chapter in the club’s history books regardless.

THEY SAID “We’re proud that Jimmy’s record stood for over 50 years and know he’d have been happy for Harry to be the one to beat it.” – The Greaves family, passing the baton.
