Getting to know... kee’ahn

When do you feel inspired? Just driving in my car. There’s something about zoning out in traffic and trying to write a song while you’re waiting. Who would you love to collaborate with? I’d love to write a vocal piece to sing with a choir of my First Nations sisters here in Birraranga (Melbourne). It’d be a dream to collaborate with Sampa the Great, too. Also, my man Leon Bridges. I’m putting this all out into the universe, as it’s been kind to me so far. What’s your go-to karaoke song? Unfortunately, I’m that person who busts out the musical theatre. I’m always down for a Dreamgirls tune or “Take Me or Leave Me” from Rent. What would you do if you were prime minister for the day? My first priority would be to employ strategies that tackle climate change and elevate Indigenous voices. Rising sea levels are already impacting my people in the Torres Strait and those in Pacific nations. Who was your first crush? Leonardo Dicaprio in Romeo + Juliet. Any local musicians you’re loving? Kalyani & Isha’s “A Leaf, A Flower” is mesmerising. And my brother Waari’s “Rainbow”. He and his live band are definitely ones to watch. It would be remiss to not mention Neil Morris of DRMNGNOW. He’s doing such important work for mob. What were you like as a teenager? Busy! I was always bouncing a basketball at school, then running off to choir rehearsals, student council meetings and sports practice. I didn’t sit still. Upon reflection, I wish I wasn’t so self-conscious and that I’d embraced my culture more. I also wish I hadn’t fallen for the hype around Twilight. So cringy.
