What do you do? I work in the film and advertising industry as a director and graphic designer. I also take photos on the side! When did you start? I directed my first music video for a friend’s band in 2016. It was an ’80s-inspired dinner party with a massive food fight that got so out of control they had to get their carpets professionally cleaned! Why did you choose that path? I was studying graphic design at uni and took a film elective where we learnt how to shoot and edit. I worked on a couple of projects and fell in love. Greatest creative achievement so far? I just directed my first proper commercial. Seeing it on TV for the first time was quite surreal! And the biggest challenge? Maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I’m an anxious person and get overwhelmed quite easily, so working too much takes an immense toll on my mental health and creative drive. Freelancing gives me the flexibility to take time off when I need some R&R. What do your parents think of your job? Mum stresses about the freelance thing. She’s always warning me about tax and super, but other than that, I think she’s proud that I’ve worked hard to get to a position where I can be my own boss and support myself. What inspires you? I always look forward to the new ‘Discover Weekly’ playlist on Spotify, and I’m constantly turning to Pinterest and Instagram as a source of inspiration. Why did you enter the Good Stuff awards? I like that they showcase such a broad spectrum of creative endeavours. Who has been your best support? My partner, who has had to deal with all the ups and downs of my work life. Al, if you’re reading this, I’m sorry! What did your high school counsellor suggest you do? Graphic design! She noticed my keen interest in typography. I was thrilled to discover there were jobs where you literally got to choose fonts all day. One thing we should know about you? I looove tomato sauce. What are you working on right now? I’m actually writing some songs! I’ve been trying to find an outlet where work and creativity don’t overlap, and music seemed like a positive thing to put my energy into. What’s your next goal? I’d love to work on a documentary or TV series! Something that allows me to travel and meet new people. Where can we see your work? imogengrist.com

Video judge Marc Fennell says: Imogen’s video clip for “Give It Time” is filmmaking with deft humour and warmth. It’s gentle but kinetic. Sensitive while still being, well, a bit of a banger.
