very weird world records

A FEW VERY ODD FEATS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

- Words Sophie Kalagas

Longest biscuit-dunking relay. There’s nothing like a quick cuppa and bikkie before getting down to some serious business. Especially when surrounded by 394 of your closest chums. In 2017, 395 members of the Shivganga Roller Skating Club in Belgaum, India, smashed a casual world record before kicking off their class – specifically, the longest-ever biscuit-dunking relay. Intel on their choice of cookie and beverage is scarce, but it sounds like a scrummy time, regardless.

Longest line of garden flamingos. It takes a whopping big backyard to break a record like this one – or an expansive stretch of parkland in Buffalo, New York. The folks from Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy placed 1500 garden flamingos in a meticulous row, then, when their record was confirmed, they adopted the pink birds out, with leftovers melted down and turned into park benches. Fastest 100-metre sprint in high heels. Have you ever tried walking in high heels? That shit is ankle-busting at worst, precarious at best. So, we offer an awe-struck round of applause to Majken Sichlau from Copenhagen, Denmark, who dashed 100 metres in 13.557 seconds while sporting a pair of the gravity-defying foot covers. Most expensive dessert. Look, we’re happy to grab a Whittaker’s Peanut Slab and call it a day, but if sweets that require you to put a mortgage on your house are the kind of thing you’re into, maybe jump on a plane and head to Serendipity 3 in New York City. The restaurant makes an ice-cream sundae that’ll set you back $25,000 USD. It’s adorned with edible 23-carat gold; served in a gold-lined goblet, the base of which features white diamonds; and eaten with a gold-anddiamond spoon that can be taken home in a doggy bag.

Longest string of bunting. People are clearly bonkers for over-thetop lengths of fabric flags: separate Guinness World Records exist for the longest bunting line, the longest knitted bunting line, and the longest bunting line made with crochet. The honours go to Germany, England and the Netherlands respectively, with the overall winner stretching a measly 17.6 kilometres.

Most canned drinks opened by a parrot in one minute. Sorry to tell you, fellow humans, but we’re not the only species with recordbreaking abilities – our avian friends are rather talented, as well. Take Zac the Macaw – a resident of San Jose, California – who cracked open 35 tinnies in 60 seconds, and in doing so, clawed his way into the record books.

Tallest (and smelliest) flower. If you happened to pay a visit to Winnipesaukee Orchids in New Hampshire on June 18, 2010, you may have smelled a world record in action. It was on that day that the amophophallus titanium (also known as the titan arum or ‘corpse flower’) bloomed to a whopping 3.1 metres, making it not only the world’s tallest flower, but also the smelliest. (Apparently the Sumatran plant releases a stench like rotting flesh.)

Most varieties of cheese on a pizza. Time to get a little patriotic, friends, for this cheesy record is held by a gent in Melbourne, Australia. Johnny di Francesco rounded up 154 different types of cheese, scraped off a gram of each one, then melted the lot into a huge, salty block at his restaurant, 400 Gradi. He whacked it on a pizza and not only took out the Guinness gong, but (presumably) gave everyone who ate it some hectic cheese dreams, too.
