Five minutes with… parsnip

Tell us your band’s origin story. Paris Richens: I was brought to tears watching the Kathleen Hanna documentary The Punk Singer, then seeing Terrible Truths perform in Wollongong in 2016. I wanted to start a new band more than ANYTHING. Stella had just moved down from Sydney, but I was too scared to instigate it, so my then-boyfriend approached her and the stars aligned. Stella pretty much brought the rest of it together. Describe your sound in three words. Carolyn Hawkins: randomwordgenerator.com just spat out 'Rich Speed Herb', which feels accurate. Where do you get your threads from? PR: Mostly op shops or from my fabulous seamstress mother. CH: I don't think I've been shopping in about five years. Stella Rennex: I find many things on the street or hanging in trees. I found three hats in the last week! I also get hand-me-downs from stylish friends. What’s the

best thing about being in a band together? PR: It’s a real treat having the freedom to create, perform and muck around with some of your closest and craziest friends. CH: Dance parties, speaking to each other in dumb voices, laughing heaps, the ability to coordinate outfits telepathically. What’s next for you? PR: Our cats will replace us at some shows as Catnip. You won’t know the difference. Bec Liston: It’s true, my cat Bob has been rehearsing every day.
