Finding your groove with… cry club

-

How did you meet? Heather Riley: We studied at the same uni and a bunch of us were sent off to Japan to learn about Japanese theatre and music. We were seated next to each other on the plane and bonded over this Cartoon Network show called Over the Garden Wall. We talked about the parts of it that made us cry. How did you find your sound? HR: The sound found us naturally. I have this hunger for big pop melodies and theatrics in punk music, like ripping guitars with sticky-sweet choruses. People are quick to dismiss pop music, but it can be just as dark and dirty as any metal song. How do you get out of a funk? Jonathan Tooke: I get a lot of satisfaction out of ticking boxes, even if it’s everyday stuff, so I have a million lists everywhere. I also try to get a bit of ‘brain off’ time every day when I’m not allowed to feel guilty about not doing anything. HR: Walk around listening to music and let my imagination run away for a while. I also like to crochet little animals or try out weird make-up and remind myself I have the capability to bring ideas to life. Any advice for readers who are still looking for their ‘people’? HR: Find people who like you how you are now, not the person you wish you were – that’s not sustainable. Also, having online friends isn’t weird anymore! JT: Don’t be worried if it takes time to find them. Most of my close friends are lesbian musicians, which was definitely something I wouldn’t have predicted before it happened! Favourite way to break the ice? HR: I’m so bad at this. Probably asking people what their favourite Vine is or letting them know ASAP how gay I am.
