OUR LAST CHECKBOOK DENVER, COLORADO (1984-2006)
I was in love with my ex-husband for 22 years until he divorced me in 2006. I saved the last checkbook we shared, and to me it represents the final and ultimate connection with him. It tells a story of, and is a record of, one of the most psychologically, emotionally and financially damaging experiences of my life. This financial record reveals how we strengthened our family, travelled and raised two beautiful kids. It also reflects our major purchases, paying for college tuition and buying our dream home in America. At the same time, the account tells the tale of how we managed to knock down and destroy everything we had built. From this checkbook, one will read how I paid several visits to two different psychologists, two psychiatrists, two lawyers and one psychiatric ward. It also speaks of one car accident, one DWI, and the renting of two different apartments. In short, it chronicles the financial splintering of our time together. For so many years I had to save it; I just couldn’t throw it away. It is like destroying the power engine of a loving relationship.
