How did you start writing music? I’ve been writing songs since I was 10. When I was 12, I tried to start a band, but we broke up quite quickly due to artistic differences. Songwriting and poetry have always been creative outlets for me, but it’s only in the past five years that I’ve actually considered putting my music out there. How would your friends describe you? Whimsical, vague, uncoordinated, ‘off with the fairies’. A friend did call me wise the other day! She may have been joking, though. Why did you move from Brisbane to London? I was in my fourth year of an operasinging degree in Brisbane and had a class with the head of a musical theatre school in London, who happened to be visiting. I’d broken up with my boyfriend the night before, so I iced my eyes and went to the lesson. At the end, he offered me a place to come and study in London. So I moved over here and haven't looked back. How does being an actor feed into your music? There’s definitely a lot of drama in my music and I love telling stories. It’s been suggested that I should write a musical… Who are your musical inspirations? I have so many! Imogen Heap, Kate Millerheidke, The Cranberries, The Decemberists, The Shins, Belle and Sebastian, Regina Spektor, Kate Bush. Tell us about your personal style. My brother once said, “You look like you fell into your wardrobe and came out wearing everything in it.” So I would say I make some bold choices when it comes to outfits. Any words of wisdom for frankie readers? Read Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. I’m reading it at the moment and it’s changing my life.
