writing + podcasts

- BENJAMIN LAW SCREENWRITER, JOURNALIST AND AUTHOR

Why do you do what you do? I’ve always been a nerd and liked learning. And there’s something in me that enjoys sharing stuff I’ve discovered. Writing and storytelling scratch those itches.

What advice would you give someone starting out in your field? Find your community and be prepared to work damn hard. Take others along with you. Best ways to connect with like-minded creative types? Join organisations, community groups, guilds and unions relevant to your field. Get involved and make sure you’re offering value to your community rather than just focusing on what others can offer you. How do you stay motivated and interested in your work? First, commit to projects that make you giddy with excitement. If you’re bored by the prospect of what you’re making, it’s going to be hard to persuade other people to be interested.

What frustrates you about the writing and podcasting environment right now? One of the questions I often ask myself with projects is, “Why this, and why now?” I see a lot of work out there that makes me wonder who exactly it’s for, and why it’s been made. What are you looking for in this year’s Good Stuff awards? Stuff that’s

original, useful and exciting. How do you know when a project is finished and you should walk

away? For me, writing feels like a big puzzle, except it’s one where you have to generate all the pieces, as well as put it together. A lot of the puzzle pieces won’t belong, and it can be hard to see that in the moment. If possible, give yourself space and time away from your work so you can see it with new eyes. Any final words for

Good Stuff entrants? If you can convincingly and passionately answer, “Why this, and why now?” you’re in with a solid chance.
