- MARC FENNELL FILM CRITIC, JOURNALIST AND PRESENTER

Why do you do what you do? I love the problemsolving and creativity of crafting most media, from a documentary to a live show. I’m also endlessly fascinated by humans and why we behave and feel the way we do. What advice would you give

someone starting out in your field? Find a creative team of people you like and trust, and invest in them. The emotional support is important, but they’ll almost definitely be the ones to deliver your best creative and financial opportunities down the track. Any tips for conquering self-doubt?

Creating is a process. Every stage of production is an opportunity to improve the final piece. Take the pressure off. Get something down on paper to start yourself off, then refine, refine, refine… What frustrates you about the film scene at the moment?

Streaming platforms are really great, but they don’t make enough Australian stuff. Australian broadcasters make a lot of local content, but their platforms and ability to cut through can often be a bit shit. And what excites you? The new streaming platform Quibi. I’m interested in mobile-first video and what that looks like for factual content, especially. Best ways to connect with like-minded creative types? Share their work. Nothing endears a creator like someone championing them. What are you looking for in this year’s Good Stuff awards?

I want something that makes me pay attention to its ingenuity, innovation, storytelling or aesthetic beauty. What obstacles have you come up against in your career? Everyone has ideas and projects that never got up, dry periods, genuine career fuck-ups and gigs they lost to someone else. Everyone. That’s partially why I like having a bunch of ideas on the go at once. It insulates from the pain of something not going my way. Any final words for Good Stuff

entrants? There’s only one rule: don’t be boring.
