talking teamwork with… dulcie

-

Describe your sound in five words. Saskia Brittain: Vibrant, melodious, rich, cheerful, encouraging. How does a Dulcie song come together? SB: We don’t really have a creative structure we follow; we just come together with bits and bobs and somehow it manages to flow. For example, we might realise the different melodies we’ve been working on individually are in the same key and fit together perfectly! What made you decide to share lead vocals? SB: Ashleigh, Timieka and I were vocalist students at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) when we started Dulcie. We all have a love for melody arrangement, so figured sharing lead vocals would allow us to keep our sound versatile and harmony-driven. Our voices suit different songs, so it works really well. What’s the key to ace vocal harmonies? Ashleigh Carr-white: PRACTICE! Growing up, we all loved to sing and got involved in school productions and choirs, so we caught on to harmonies at a pretty young age. But anyone can harmonise once you get the hang of it! What makes a good team player? Madison Hanley: It’s about listening to each other and making space for everybody to be heard and have a meaningful contribution. Trickiest part of being in a band? MH: Balancing band life with everyday life. We all have such fun writing, recording, playing and going to festivals, but we need to come back to our hospo and retail jobs. Hopefully one day we can all be full-time rockstars. What would we find you doing together (aside from playing music)? SB: We do weekly family dinners, pool/beach days, surfing trips, skating, picnics and op-shopping. Not a week goes by when we don’t hang out.
