KRISTY BARBER FASHION DESIGNER, KUWAII
At Kuwaii, we used to have the ‘magic whiteboard’. We called it that because every goal we wrote on it came true! I don’t think it was actually magic, but the simple act of writing out your dreams means they’re so much more likely to eventuate. This vision board is a combination of the past and the future. I wanted it to reflect my history and how important that is to look back on: many of the trims were my grandmother’s, or vintage things I’ve collected. These treasured keepsakes represent sentimentality and a love for family and memory. I’ve also included some things to represent the future: the new season of Kuwaii, reminders to see and be inspired by more art this year, and to spend more time outdoors and grow a magical wonderland garden of my own. My daughter’s painting represents growth, hope and love, while the collaboration patches are a symbol of working with likeminded people who bring joy to my everyday. In 2020, during the forced stoppage that came from lockdowns, I was able to take some space and rethink the entire production model of Kuwaii. We’re now producing fewer styles each season in limited and hand-numbered editions, and encouraging customers to pre-order to secure their piece. We’re using luxurious and special limited-edition fabrics, many of which are production surplus, and we’ve brought in a garment and fabric recycling program. During the pandemic I’ve reflected, learnt, and taken time to totally rethink the existing fashion model. This year, on the other hand, I’m looking at a fresh, new start for myself. I want to move house and make a new home, investing some of the huge amounts of energy that have been put into my business into myself, my family and my own space.
