Yes, 2020 was definitely a mixed bag, but it also gave me a few amazing gifts, like the freedom to be bold – what’s the worst that could happen when it feels like the worst has already happened? It also forced me to be alone and face things I’d successfully run away from in the past. I’m walking into the new year with a few battle scars, but with a much stronger and healthier sense of self, as well. I have a huge love of being on the road, which made being locked inside for a lot of last year extra-tough. This board represents all the adventures my kids and I managed to sneak in between lockdowns, and that we hope to have more of in the future. I love tactile, sensory things and an onslaught of colour and texture, and I think I’ve managed to tick all those boxes! Some of my favourite items on the board include a cover of a Nick Cave cassette I found in a junk store in Warracknabeal, Victoria (his birthplace) and a sticker from the Australian Pinball Museum in Nhill, Victoria. It’s in an old motel and it’s freaking incredible! I also have the Uluru Statement from the Heart on my board, as I love travelling this beautiful country, but am aware I’m on stolen land, and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not recognised in the Australian Constitution. Always was, always will be. This board will take pride of place in our kitchen at home. It’s not only for myself, but for my two girls, as well. I hope it will remind us not to get too stuck in the everyday, and to make sure we get out and discover our own backyard.
