Say hi to… JAZZPARTY
What’s the band’s origin story? Loretta Miller: Our founder Darcy Mcnulty was asked to put together a jazz band for a month-long event on Monday nights at a pub. There was poetry and a room screening obscure old films, and it gained popularity quickly. We would then play different venues in Melbourne with only three rules: free entry, we bring our piano and we don’t play on stage. In the beginning, you needed a password to get in. It was a real boozy, pumping party for people game enough to go hard on a Monday night. What can we expect from a JAZZPARTY gig? LM: Danceable songs with deep meanings and a ragtag bunch of musicschool dropouts at the top of their game (or maybe slightly worse for wear) absolutely giving you everything they’ve got. How many band members are there? LM: Generally eight, but it can sometimes be up to 12. We often have guests – you never quite know who will show up and sit in. What’s your secret song-writing recipe? Darcy Mcnulty: Give yourself time and space. Tell the truth. Plagiarise your friends’ conversations. Don’t listen to the jackal show in your head telling you how not to do things. Make an appointment for something and be late – you’ll start getting ideas on the way there. The later you are, the better the ideas. What’s something most people don’t know about JAZZPARTY? Lachlan Mitchell: We’re actually a cult that sleeps in the same bed and we do weird rituals that we can’t explain here.
