Hello! My name is Ryan Downey and I am a singersongwriter with a deep voice. If there’s one thing you

should know about me, it’s that I don’t really like to

talk about myself. When I was younger, I wanted to sound like I knew love, and now I know love. Not a bad

trajectory. If I could soundtrack any movie, it would be a new Pedro Almodóvar film because there’s a heightened drama and sensuality to his style that I relate to, and music plays such an important part in the dynamism of his films. My advice for learning an instrument would be: work out as much of it on your own as you can before getting proper lessons. You might have to undo a few bad habits later, but at least you’ll have your own relationship with the instrument and that’s how your ‘voice’ gets in.

The best way to deal with heartache is to cry. Pretty good function the body has. The last thing that inspired me was rehearsing with my wonderful band last night. I’m feeling very ready to step back onto the stage – we’re finally able to tour the album I released back in May.

People think being a musician is about opening up yourself for the world to look in, but really it’s more often about holding up a mirror. If I could invent one thing, it would be something that allows you to experience a taste or a film or a song like it’s the first time again.

I feel happiest when I’m having all my attention swallowed up by something or someone.
