a little chat with… astari mudana from coconut cream
How did Coconut Cream come to be? We started making music in 2018 during our first year at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Jasmine and I were in the same class and I remember just asking her, “Hey, do you want to start a band?” Describe your sound in five words. Dreamy guitars and storytelling lyrics. What might people be surprised to learn about you? That Jas and I are both half Indonesian. Who would you most like to collaborate with? Probably Courtney Barnett or Stella Donnelly. We love their music and they’re both two huge Aussie female artists we look up to. How do you get your creative juices flowing? When I’m writing a song, I always draw from personal experiences and find inspiration through reading books, observing the world around me and taking long walks or train rides. What excites you the most about music at the moment? The inclusion of more women in the music industry is always exciting to see. We have a female friend who has just become a sound engineer and who now works at venues around Sydney. In three years of playing shows, we’ve never once had a female sound tech, which is crazy. If you hadn’t gone into music, what would you be doing? Chad would be doing screenwriting, Jas would be doing research into renewable energy, Oscar would be doing engineering and I would probably be doing something in the health field. What are you looking forward to at the moment? Our EP! It’s coming out through Broth Records on February 18th.
