Get to know… comedian samantha andrew

-

How did you get started in comedy? My time in school, where I had an incessant need to be the class clown, were my training years. It wasn’t until after studying jazz voice at university that I thought, “C’mon, you’re not going to be a serious singer, are you?” I wanted to be writing and singing parody songs about that crush you get on the girl who works at General Pants, and I wanted to do it as m y job. In2018, I was approached by two acting mates who wanted to write a cabaret about being a bisexual woman, containing all original music. From there, our cabaret Baby Bi Bi Bi was born. How are your Tiktok sketches different from your live shows? On Tiktok I try to appeal more to the general masses, whereas my live shows are more random and niche. In mine and my creative partner Mel’s most recent show, Shit Wrecked!, we have an epic musical theatre number in which I play an emo Emma Stone who gets turned into a balloon animal by a wizard and left on the Spirit of Tasmania. This is accompanied by a grandiose and harrowing symphony and hectic flashing red stage lights. What’s your hobby? I love swimming. Am I great at it? No. Do I go mainly for the sauna andspa? Yes. Do I feel like an Olympian when I trot to the showers with my towel over my shoulder after a session? Absolutely. Favourite dad joke? Why is cold water soinsecure? Because it’s never called hot.
