get to know… estère
What’s electric blue witch-hop? It’s a genre that I made up because I couldn’t fit my music into any specific genre. Electric is the energy of my music and its connection to electronic music. Blue is its synaesthetic colour and witch-hop is how it weaves together mystery, magic and beats. How did growing up in Wellington influence your sound? I felt a lot of creative freedom, which might be a product of growing up in a city that has a lot of creatives just doing their thing. What’s the best way to listen to your music?
If it’s earlier stuff, listen on big speakers or in a car. My last release, Archetypes, suits walking in nature and listening through headphones. The EP I’ve just finished will be great at parties or if you want to get your dance on. How does your work in anthropology influence your music? Are there parallels between the two? Anthropology altered my perspective and how I look at the world around me. Cultural Anthropology looks at culture (gasp) and music is a form of culture. They both revolve around the same subject: human beings and how they exist in the world! What really grinds your gears? Dishonesty, patriarchal gatekeeping and the feeling of foam (the type in a mattress). What’s something most people don’t know about you? I’m quite shy and reserved when you first meet me. I have an impression that, as a performer, I come across more extroverted than I am. How would you describe your music to your nan? My nan is my idol! I always show her what I’m working on so there isn’t any reason to describe it. She’s quite deaf but she always bops her head along to the drums.
