HOW GEORGIA PERRY CREATED OUR PATTERN

-

How did you use the Adobe Firefly-powered Text to Vector Graphic capability (on Illustrator) to create the floral pattern displayed inside our cover and throughout frank bits? For the input, I used terms like “warm”, “cosy” and “1970s retro wallpaper” to generate some simple patterns that we could choose from. The tool spat out some really great options which I then adjusted to our chosen colour palette, which was such a benefit of the program. It’s interesting that by using text prompts, you still managed to generate something that reflects your usual style. Totally. It’s about being really descriptive with your language and trying again and trying again – because it doesn’t start perfect. You’ve got to have the right language and the right words to get what you want out of it. So, it does still take a bit of creativity and a bit of knowledge to get the tool to do what you want. Were the other pattern options that the tool generated similar to the final pattern? They started out as too busy and too ornate, and I knew that they wouldn’t complement the cover. So, I started to use inputs like “repeat print wallpaper”, “simplified”, “abstract”, “retro 1970s” and “daisy wallpaper print”. It’s a bit of a paradox – you have to put more words in to get a simpler output. But it was a fun process. How would you use this tool in the future? I’d use it for idea generation and as a starting point for patterns and other work, rather than using it for a finished product. It is a mind-blowing tool.
