Talking about our hometowns…

WITH FOLK-POP TRIO TINY HABITS.

- Interview Eleanor Burnard

FAVOURITE SPOT TO HANG OUT? Maya Rae: I’m originally from Vancouver and I always love going to the beach and seeing the ocean when I’m back there. It’s a very healing place for me. Judah Mayowa: I’m from Alabama, and whenever I go back to see my friends we always go to Waffle House. We used to go there all the time after school and prom, and we would just eat waffles and have a good time. Cinya Khan: I’m from Florida and I also love going to the beach. My family also has a bunch of hammocks, so we go hammocking in the parks which is really nice.

WHAT DO PEOPLE WEAR IN YOUR HOMETOWN? MR: People in Vancouver try to be really trendy – It’s kind of like the LA of Canada, but more outdoorsy. They’re always dressed like they’re ready for a hike! JM: It’s really all over the place: athletic wear, cowboy boots, and because there are a lot of college sports teams over there, people wear sport jerseys of their favourite teams. CK: It’s a weird mix of elderly people and shirtless surfers, so there are a lot of bikinis, short-shorts and little grandma tunics.

BEST PLACE FOR GRUB? JM: The motherfucking Waffle House! CK: There’s this place on the beach that has the best pizza. It’s right over the water and also has an ice-cream place next door.

So good! MR: I’m also such an ice-cream girly, and there’s this place in Gastown called Soft Peaks that’s organic and so, so good.

WHAT’S YOUR TOWN FAMOUS FOR? JM: Probably football, definitely sports. MR: Vancouver is very famous for leisure, and Whistler is really close by, which is one of the most beautiful skiing spots.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUSIC SCENE THERE? JM:

It’s nice. There are a lot of coffee shops that have live bands that come in and do their thing. Most of the time it’s just cover bands, but every now and then someone plays their own original music – mostly country songs. CK: There’s this place downstream from my house called Common Grounds – which is just such a cute name for a coffee shop – and it was the place I performed my own songs live for the first time. There are a lot of people playing guitars and singing their hearts out. MR: Vancouver has a pretty good music scene. When I was younger, I would play in the jazz clubs and bars downtown. It’s a nice little community.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOWN’S WORST ATTRIBUTES? JM: That has to be the level of racism. It’s crazy and for no reason at all. CK: Discrimination is also a serious issue in Florida. I’m always just like, why are we doing this? Why are people like this? MR: I don’t know what I hate most about it. It’s weird, I don’t even feel like I’m from there anymore. But it is annoying that being Canadian made it so difficult to come and live here in the US!

ANY NATIVE CRITTERS? CK: Florida is really interesting because there are squirrels, lizards and tonnes of birds. My family loves to visit the bird sanctuary and my dad has a little bird book that he brings with him – it’s really sweet. Florida also has lots of centipedes and spiders, so I try to avoid those. MR: Vancouver has deer, cougars, wolves, orcas and sea lions. JM: It’s really sad to say, but there’s a lot of roadkill.
