GETTING THERE

FLY, GET A FAST BOAT OR THE FERRY – TAKING 25 MINUTES OR 5 HOURS

Fraser Coast Chronicle - - WEEKEND -

Lombok is a quick 25-minute flight from Bali or for a cheaper, but much longer option, you can take a boat.

The author chose to fly with Garuda Indonesia from Bali (much safer option than taking a boat) to Lombok International Airport.

Fares start from under $100 return.

A number of other airlines also fly from Bali to Lombok.

A private car transfer with Expedia was organised for the hour-long drive to Senggigi Beach.

Travellers arriving at Lombok airport who have not organised a car transfer, don’t despair. Just walk outside and you will be met by many eager drivers touting for your business.

Travellers who prefer to take a boat to Lombok from Bali have various options. Boats leave from Padang Bai Harbour in Bali and arrive at Lembar Harbour in Lombok.

Travelling by boat to Lombok in bad weather conditions is not such a good idea, particularly with children as the seas can get very choppy. A fast boat takes about two hours.

For those on a strict budget, you can also take a local ferry which will take about five hours.

But be warned – the ferry is almost always late and is not for the faint-hearted.
