Dragons set to battle on the Bay

DRAGON BOATS: Clad in orange and black, paddles at the ready; Hervey Bay Dragon Boat Club’s members will be out on the bay tomorrow morning to salvage pride, win bragging rights, and gain valuable momentum in round two of Greater Wide Bay Series Regatta.

The series features fives clubs – Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, 1770, Cooloola and Burnett River – with a monthly race at each venue.

It was 1770 who stormed to victory at Bundaberg last month, but Hervey Bay DBC secretary Gail Gilroy said the local club was ready and willing to win one back at the home patch this weekend.

“1770 has been the stronger team for the last few years, while us and Bundaberg battle it out for second and third, but we like to think we’re improving,” Gilroy said. “It was a close race in Bundy, I think we were only a few paddle strokes off.”

After the relative safety of Bundaberg’s Burnett River in the series opener, teams will head out into the open water environment that is Hervey Bay.

“Being open, you do get a bit OF chop and there’s a bit more of a current,” Gilroy said.

“Each race is different.” Racing starts at 8.30am and is expected to finish about noon.

Cooloola will host the next round in July, before Burnett River hosts its first round in August. 1770 will host the finale in September.
