SHED LIGHT ON STYLE CHOICES
GOOD ILLUMINATION MAKES YOU LOOK GREAT AS MUCH AS IT MAKES YOUR HOME MORE BEAUTIFUL
You may think lighting is an accessory – the odd table lamp to prevent you falling over the coffee table at night – but it isn’t all function in the traditional sense.
Well thought-out illumination is essential to creating the mood and tone in the different rooms in your home. Lighting plays a role in helping you look and feel fabulous – as anyone who’s tripped over the bags under their eyes in fluoro lighting knows.
Well thought-out interiors comprise a variety of lighting sources – layered and individually adjustable.
This is the fixed overhead lighting that provides general illumination for a room.
General lighting should spill soft, flattering light across your space, providing functional visibility and creating a natural ambience without a harsh glare. Pendants, downlights, recessed, track lighting, chandeliers and wall sconces can all provide functional lighting.
This form of lighting comes into play when you have a task to do – whether that’s reading the newspaper in your favourite armchair, reading a book in bed or preparing a meal at the kitchen bench.
Task lighting is directional and performs a specific function, and can include lights recessed under the cupboards in a kitchen or bathroom, lights in a bedhead or an angle-poise lamp on a desk.
Accent or feature lighting can be used to highlight a room’s features such as artworks or decorative objects. Accent lighting spotlights the areas of your home you want to showcase, leaving lesser areas to retreat into the shadows – think wall lights, recessed lights, spotlights and table lamps.
Don’t forget good lighting doesn’t always have to involve a power point. For soft feature lighting that creates a relaxing mood, candles are matchless, particularly if you opt for battery operated flameless candles. Not only are flameless candles safe, many have a timer function that means you can set them to flicker off after you fall asleep.
