Fraser Coast Chronicle - - DIGEST - – Will Dale

MOTORSPORT: Total domination. Triple Eight simply annihilated their Supercars opposition in winning the Sandown 500, Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell leading a total team lockout of the podium.

Shane van Gisbergen and Earl Bamber came home second from Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards, the first time in race history that one team has filled the top three positions.

The only time Car No.1 lost the lead was during the pit stops, handing the point over for just two tours out of 161.

Their closest challenger – Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat – were a whopping 25 seconds behind.

The results see van Gisbergen extend his championship lead over McLaughlin to 55 points ahead of the Bathurst 1000.

Whincup encountered heavy traffic with five laps to go, bringing his advantage down sharply from over eight seconds to under six.

A lap later it was under five. Another lap later it was down under four.

But that was as close as it got, Whincup running home the winner by almost seven seconds with the first three cars covered by just eight.

McLaughlin held off Reynolds for best of the rest, with Scott Pye and Warren Luff charging from 19th on the grid to finish sixth.

“We couldn’t be happier,” Whincup said. “The car has been awesome all weekend. We just kept our heads down and kept concentrating.”
