SPORT: KELSEY STEPS UP FOR THE SHIELD

Four good innings could lead Kelsey to country cap

Fraser Coast Chronicle - - GOOD MORNING FRASER COAST - MATTHEW MCINERNEY Matthew.McInerney@newsregionalmedia.com.au

Nic Kelsey will have the best opportunity of his young cricket career when he represents South Queensland’s under-21s at this weekend’s Schaeffer Shield.

The Bushrangers allrounder and reigning Hervey Bay Cricket Association Player of the Year will line up alongside some of the state’s best young cricketers, when they take on open-aged teams from South East Queensland, Wide Bay, Gold Coast, and Darling Downs.

A good performance in the side’s Twenty20 games could pave the way to an international tour, with selectors to name a side to represent Queensland Country in a tour of New Zealand later this year.

“It will be tough, the older blokes will have a lot more experience but we should have speed on our side,” Kelsey said,

“I’ll be one of the younger ones in the team.”

Kelsey has struggled for runs in the Fraser Coast 40 Over A Grade competition.

A noted run machine, he has scored just 94 runs from five innings (an average of 18.80).

He has been more dangerous with the ball in hand, taking five wickets at 14.

His economy rate of just 3.18 runs per over has helped the second-placed Bushrangers suffocate its rivals’ scoring opportunities, as the side won four of its first six games of the newly-combined season.

Rep cricket is a different beast, and the faster bowlers may help the youngster.

“I actually haven’t done too well in the local competition but there will definitely be more speed which I see as an advantage,” Kelsey said.

“You don’t have as much time to advance down the wicket or plan, but I actually prefer that. I think the slower speeds get me. The target is definitely to be picked for Queensland Country.”

Schaeffer Shield starts today.
