Woods to motivate

Fremantle Gazette - - NEWS -

RENOWNED burns surgeon Fiona Wood will present a lecture about motivation at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) as part of a series named in her honour.

The City Beach resident will take to the stage at 6pm on September 11 as part of the Fiona Wood Public Lecture Series.

Dr Wood said she wanted the public to gain a better understanding of the health system and how they fitted into it.

“I’m a burns surgeon and I’ve worked in health all my adult life; I’ve seen suffering that is overwhelming,” she said.

“I’ve seen suffering that has changed people’s lives forever and I’ve worked in teams that I’ve built that have focused on caring.

“That whole thing that we do is underpinned by caring for people, it’s fundamental, so we start exploring what motivates us and that is a hard question to answer. I will talk about motivation both externally plus what keeps you going internally.”

Dr Wood said she often thought about motivation and the ways that people overcame incredible odds.

“You see some of the patients and they just keep going and I see it in my team some days,” she said.

“Business as usual has to be the A-game all the time because unless you bring your A-game all the time and really drive care at the best level, then you’ll always be living with the ‘could have done better’.

“The report card that says you could have done better has no place in health. How do we use our knowledge of motivation and of each other, empathy and caring to actually deliver excellence in health, that’s the idea.”

A second lecture is planned for November 13 by FSH cardiothoracic surgeon Nikki Stamp, who will share insights into how men and women can maintain a healthy heart.
