ON the day a race stops the nation, Australian Red Cross Blood Services are urging people to not stop donating blood. The Fremantle Blood Donor Centre has nearly 100 appointments needing to be filled, with appointments on Melbourne Cup Day being less than half full. Blood Service spokeswoman Jessica Willet said she was asking people to continue to donate during Melbourne Cup Week. “One in three Australians will need blood or a blood product in their lifetime, yet only one in 30 donates,” she said. The Blood Service is concerned platelets from blood donations could run low by the time the last race is run on Melbourne Cup Day. Call 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au.
