Get the most out of dynamics processors

Whether you seek the dynamics reduction capabilities of compression or the sidechain-ability of gates, a maximiser for your master’s output chain or a de-esser for a troublesome vocal, plug-in libraries are awash with options for manipulating dynamics.

Dynamics processing is one of those areas where even seasoned professionals are constantly learning new things, so through the following pages, we’re going to split our attentions between studying some new tricks as well as making sure our understanding of how our processors work is solid. We’ll look at the relationship between dynamics modules and other effects areas, such as EQ, to better understand how best to get tone and volume under control. We’ll turn the spotlight on compression approaches too – stereo compression versus multiband compression and the advantages and creative possibilities offered by switching from stereo to mid/side processing.
