“How boring would music be, or food, fashion, movies, art, anything if everything goes by the same rules? There are hundreds of great tutorials and books to read up on production or writing music. The most valuable advice I believe, is to encourage everyone to free their minds, because then the beat will follow.

“I once was engaged in a production of an album by a well known DJ in Berlin. Since he spins records in clubs worldwide he constantly showed me the Top Ten Beatport Tracks and wanted this and that to be incorporated into his music because it obviously sells and works. I tried really hard but it just did not work. Saying that, I have styled myself after many musical styles over the course of my professional career as a composer for television. The more you focus on rules, the less original, unique, the less ‘you’ it will be.”

Rules are there to break

“By accident or on purpose. You will read this across many crafts and arts. Great things often happen by accident… by doing something wrong! “The unofficial Jai Paul album [ famously leaked in

2013] exemplifies this – production wise he broke so many rules and yet, the feel of this album is timeless. A true masterpiece. I’m not sure it would ever have turned out that good if he would have rolled off the low-end... yes, it’s super bass-heavy, but it’s one of the most unique musical pieces in the last decade.”
