Sounds & Samples

Since 2011, 8DIO have released a huge number of Kontakt-based sample libraries, which largely focus on sonics geared toward film and TV music. However, they are also responsible for the 150GB of audio samples which form the basis of Sequential’s new, and highly covetable, Prophet XL synth. The first of their products on review this month is ‘Century Ostinato Strings’ that weighs in at 20GB (12GB when compressed) across over 20,000 samples. As the name suggests, this collection is devoted to creating repeating rhythmic string patterns, and is broadly split between single ‘hits’ that can be played in an ostinato style and full rhythmic phrases.

The multi-samples would in fact work in a range of styles. I compared the Spiccato articulation to that in ‘Anthology’ and, as expected, there was a noticeable difference in tone, with ‘Ostinato Strings’ delivering a looser, characterful sound which responds well to dynamic playing. The phrase-based samples are also split into Bass, Cello, Viola and Violin sections and were recorded at four different tempos, with dynamics (utilising different sets of samples) controlled by the mod wheel. These phrases are four bars in length, with no built-in looping, and require re-triggering for longer held parts. It’s also worth mentioning that all patches are available in Time Machine Pro versions, which makes a difference to the playback quality of tempo-synced samples.

The interface uses the 8DIO GUI familiar from the Anthology series and their other multiarticulation libraries. It is very clear and easy to use, with the main page devoted to articulation selection and mapping, mic position (Mixed, Decca, Close and Far), Convolution-based reverb and basic EQ. Further processing can be applied on the Effects page, which consists of six different rack effects.

For those looking to utilise strings in a more rhythmic way ‘Century Ostinato Strings’ could be just what you need. Another strong contender from 8DIO. Bruce Aisher 8dio.com VERDICT 8.9
