Lubomyr Melnyk Fallen Trees
Erased Tapes
Celebrated Ukrainian composer and pianist Lubomyr Melnyk unveils his beautiful third album for ambient stalwarts, Erased Tapes. After years of relative obscurity, Melnyk’s energetic, highly impressive compositions found a wider audience after being picked up by Erased Tapes in 2013. Fallen Trees is now the third record the prolific 70-year-old has released with the German-run, London based imprint. Renowned for his experimental approach and incredible technical skills, based around his concept of ‘continuous music’ where his mind-bogglingly fast piano playing creates a spell-binding wall of music, Melnyk once again pushes the boundaries. His rich, expansive soundscape takes us on a meandering journey, much like Melnyk’s long train journey through a forest in Europe that inspired the record, with an autumnal atmosphere at once melancholic and hopeful. Notes cascade with momentum through his imagined, rugged terrain. There are moments that feel manic but there are also quieter, darker, more introspective refrains where you sense a more brooding atmosphere than seen in his work before. Melnyk creates an immersive and, despite the chaos, peaceful record – and in doing so, unleashes a modern transcendental great.
