Best of the rest…
Steinberg Cubase 10
Another version 10 update aimed at pleasing long-time users, the latest iteration of Cubase gains new channel strips, better audio tools and improved side-chain routing. The real highlight is the improved UI, which makes Cubase feel fresher than it has in years.
FXpansion Cypher2
Multidimensional Polyphonic Expression (or MPE) continues its rise, but FXpansion’s analogue-style Cypher synth is the best use of it we’ve seen so far. With a powerful sound engine and fantastic pulsing ambient and textural presets, this is a must-try, MPE or not.
KV331 Synthmaster One for iOS
Released in plugin form last year, Synth master One is a simplified yet still powerful take on KV331’s flagship wave table synth. This year saw the synth land on iPad, bringing nearly the same set of features and a ton of great presets, all at a rock-bottom price of £10.
Softube Weiss DS1-Mk3
The Weiss DS1 compressor/ limiter has long been accessible to only top-end studios, at an astronomical price. After three years’ development, Softube’s take ports the original code from the hardware into plugin form. Not cheap, but given what you get, it’s a steal.
FabFilter Pro-L 2
Products from FabFilter’s Pro range are must-haves for many producers, thanks to their clear interfaces, powerful feature sets and excellent sound. This updated limiter builds on a classic with new modes and a refined UI, for another essential addition to your toolbox.
