Digging digital
I’ll probably have my music production licence revoked for admitting this, but most of my favourite synths aren’t pure analogue. Or, more accurately, I’m of the opinion that the best music making gear combines at least some digital wizardry in with its analogue electronics. Sure, it’s hard to beat the grit and unpredictability that comes with good old fashioned circuitry, but for deep sequencing, evolving textures and adventurous processing, digital technology is the way to go. For the best results, combine a little of both.
A case in point is this issue’s cover star, the new Minilogue XD. It builds on the solid analogue foundations of the original Minilogue by adding a new digital oscillator and expanded effect section, and it’s all the better for taking this hybrid approach.
