Tip of the Sphere
Anti-Records
Tip of the Sphere is psychedelic folk singer-songwriter Cass McCombs’ most confident album yet. Following on from 2016’s Mangy Love, his most acclaimed work to date, this is his ninth studio album and his most direct yet. Right from the start, McCombs settles into a dreamy, hazy and loose folk-rock sound that feels natural and easygoing. The dynamic artist’s previous work has seen him twist and turn through various styles and genres at once, but the new record is more focused thematically, pushing his exquisite songwriting to the forefront. Exploring identity, reincarnation, criminality, suicide and Armageddon, McCombs weaves a fascinating journey, driven by a hazy mysticism and a sense of understated knowledge. There is a rawness and intimacy to this album, adding to the personal
aesthetic that the Californian continues to excel at. A beguiling record, Tip of the
Sphere feels like McCombs’ most idiosyncratic album to date, encapsulating his ability to mix the experimental with accessibility and warmth in perfect harmony. Tom Jones ADD THESE TO YOUR PLAYLIST: Estrella, Sidewalk Bop After Suicide, American Canyon Sutra| 8/10
