CV313 Glass City Sessions
Minimood
CV313’ second album is highly immersive, brooding and twisted excursion into the depths of the dub techno sound that its creator played a large part in shaping. Although CV313 has been operating since the mid ’90s, Stephen Hitchell was also one half of pioneering duo, Echospace, alongside Rod Modell. Following on from CV313’s debut album, the hugely impressive Dimensional Space from 2016, Glass City
Sessions features extended reworkings of tracks that Echospace played in an abandoned asylum outside of Detroit back in 2000. Reflecting that setting, this album is dark, eerie, spacious and unsettling. Rattling metal sounds, watery chords, static, reverb, scratching synths, distant pads and grumbling bass combine to create a sense of suspense and watchfulness that seeps into every sinew of the record. Its slowed-down pace and hypnotic nature are such that it ramps up the tension, giving you the sense that something sinister is around the corner. This wary atmosphere creates a feeling of hypersensitivity throughout the album, allowing each sound to send shockwaves through your nervous system and sending alarm signals to a brain ravaged by a sense of fear. Strange and even dangerous, but like the best horror films, you’ll still somehow want to go back. Tom Jones ADD THESE TO YOUR PLAYLIST: Belle Isle Symphonics, Masonic Mystic, Stars Above Elmwood| 9/10
