Somni Home
Friends of Friends Music
Two years on from his much-celebrated debut album Bloom, UK-born, US-based producer, Leo Shulman, aka Somni, delivers his wide-ranging sophomore album, Home. Based on his return from San Francisco back to LA, the city where he has lived since he was eight years old, this expertly crafted record has a distinct west coast vibe. Channelling the spirit of the city’s widely-loved pioneers such as J Dilla and Flying Lotus, Somni burrows deep into West Cost soul, hip-hop and beat construction. Home has a wonderfully home-spun feel, drawing on beat tape production and home recording influences to create a psychedelic patchwork of soulful, groovy productions that take us on a journey across a sun-hardened landscape. Somni creates lush, immersive atmospheres where time drifts with weightlessness and a sense of misty nostalgia. Dusty grooves snake through improvised rhythms, warm bass and woozy electronics to create a beautiful and natural- sounding palette. Shulman’s own sugar-powered vocals add a sweetness to a record that already has a languid, daydream-like atmosphere. In returning to the city where he feels most at home, Shulman has created his most personal and distinct work yet, capturing the spirit of both him and his city with aplomb. Tom Jones
