Bananagun The True Story of Bananagun

- Tom Jones

Full Time Hobby

This is the brilliant debut album from the simply uncategorisable Australian five-piece of the same name. Formed in Melbourne and led by multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Nick van Bakel, the band first came to attention via ANTI FADE Records last summer with an EP of the delicious, sun-fried psych-pop that now litters their debut LP. Following another EP on Full Time Hobby earlier this year, the album arrives with a sweet explosion of colour and energy. The True Story of Bananagun is beautifully upbeat and wonderfully diverse. The ever-shifting soundscape morphs with effortless ease, creating an intoxicating blend of fuzzed-out psychedelia, sweet pop-influenced rock, jazz, 1970s afrobeat, highlife, ’60s rock, exotica and tropical. Driven by a heady concoction of wild rhythms and infectious grooves, the record’s dense atmospheres unravel and spin out into these beautifully loose and instinctive tracks. Frenzied guitar lines stretch out over funky drums, rich melodies and sun-laden grooves, as the record basks in its light-hearted psychedelia. Thoroughly involving, upbeat and fun, the album takes us on a wild ride across continents from south America to Africa, the US and beyond. Traversing time periods as easily as it does the globe, The True Story of Bananagun is a unifying work of connectivity that can bring people of the world closer together. This album is something special.
