Wankelmut resamples mangled drums

Jacob Dilßner, aka Wankelmut, has made his mark with killer house cuts for the likes of Get Physical Music and Defected. For his Sample Challenge, he goes to town with Live’s Beat Repeater for some creative resampling.

“I could have gone with a straight-up four-to-the-floor house beat, which is what I normally do, but I wanted to try something more interesting.” Instead Jacob turns to the Drum Break sample and mangles it with Ableton’s Beat Repeater to create glitchy results.

02 >

He manipulates the Beat Repeater settings while recording the results to audio before slicing out his favourite parts. Using this method he turns the drum loop into everything from rumbling bass through to glitchy FX sweeps.

Jacob heavily detunes a slice of the audio and sequences it to create his bassline. He adds a sidechain compressor to duck the bass and then uses Soundtoys’ MicroShift to add a little width. A filter is used to add movement to the arrangement.

For the beat Jacob uses the glitchy elements from his resampled drum loop. He also uses the Grill Pan sample as a shaker, processing it with Ableton’s Vocoder to give it more of a noise-like quality. He fleshes that out further with the one-shot drum hits and elements sliced from the original drum loop. For a little processing, iZotope Neutron is used on the drum buss and kick/bass buss.

Next, Jacob takes the Open Up Your Eyes vocal sample and imports it to Omnisphere’s granular synthesis engine. He uses a Fadefox DJ controller to get handson with the sound. He messes around with the sound, creating pads and some automated, resonant chords.

To flesh things out, Jacob uses Serum as his one synth part. He uses this to build a lead to copy the bassline. Finally he builds an atmospheric intro part using the found sounds, but eventually decides to leave it out of the finished track.
