Z.I.P.P.O & Hiver’s remote techno collaboration

Having recently dropped their latest electro-tinged collaboration, Italian producers Z.I.P.P.O, aka Giuseppe Maffei and Hiver, Giuseppe Albrizio and Sergio Caio, link up remotely to tackle our sample challenge.

Z.I.P.P.O loads an assortment of the one-shot samples into Drum Racks in Ableton Live, in order to build a groove. He combines the FX Weapon sound, 909 Clap and 808 Rim to create a snare. ValhallaDelay is used to bring the layers together and add space. The 808 Kick is used with Live’s Drum Buss applied to add punch.

More layering is used to create a shaker/hat combo. The 808 Clav and Rim are used to add more percussive touches, with delay and distortion to add rhythm and character. Next he loads the You Give Me Every Thing I Need vocal into Simpler. Echo and EQ are applied to bring it to life.

UAD’s Empirical Labs Distressor is applied across all the sounds so far. Sugar Bytes Looperator is used to create interesting snare effects. A shortened, retimed slice of the Drum Loop sample is laid over the top and high-passed. Z.I.P.P.O then exports the loop and sends it to Hiver.

Hiver start off by loading the stems into Logic. They open Arturia Pigments, in order to use its sampling and wavetable oscillators. Using the Granular mode, the Bongo sample is turned into a droning pad texture. Using the same technique, the Synth Ping sound is turned into a string-like sound.

For a VST part, Hiver turns to Roland’s D-50 plugin for classic Detroit-style bass. Arturia Spark is then used to sequence a shaker pattern. Hiver then work on the arrangement, bringing elements in and out, before sending the results back to Z.I.P.P.O.

Back in Ableton Live, Z.I.P.P.O works on the arrangement further, creating transitions and variations. Finally, he processes the drum buss with UAD’s Culture Vulture and applies a master limiter.
